xDuoo has quietly built one of the most recognizable lineups in the budget tube-hybrid space, and the MT-602 has long served as a gateway for headphone enthusiasts curious about tube coloration.
Priced at $149, the MT-02 sits comfortably above the MT-602 but well below xDuoo’s more elaborate all-in-one offerings like the DM-01, positioning itself as a dedicated amplification stage for listeners who already have a trusted source.
Read on to see whether the MT-02’s redesigned acrylic-and-tube aesthetic and revised circuit deliver enough of an upgrade to justify the jump, and how it stacks up against both the MT-602 it replaces and the pricier DM-01.
Features
The xDuoo MT-02 is a dedicated headphone amplifier and preamp built around a dual 6J1 vacuum tube voltage-gain stage feeding into a pure Class-A transistor output section and is rated for a maximum output of 1500mW at 32Ωs, letting it easily power various full-sized headphones.
A front-panel two-level gain switch (+12dB/+18dB) lets the MT-02 scale between efficient IEMs and demanding full-sized cans, something its predecessor notably lacked and a frequent point of criticism in owner feedback.
A 30-second relay-protected startup delay lets the tubes reach proper operating temperature and prevents any harsh popping when powering the unit on or off, a small but appreciated refinement.
Design
Where most budget tube amps hide their tubes behind a plain metal shell, the MT-02 takes the opposite approach. Its chassis wraps a transparent acrylic enclosure, letting you see straight into the circuit board and both glowing 6J1 tubes from the side rather than only from above.
It is a genuinely compact unit at 13.6 x 11.0 x 8.1cm and 0.61kg, small enough to sit comfortably beside a monitor without dominating the desk.
The front panel keeps things simple and legible: a large volume knob dominates the center, flanked by the power switch and the new gain toggle, with the 6.35mm and 4.4mm headphone jacks positioned neatly below.
Around the back sit the RCA auxiliary input and pre-out, the external ground terminal, and the DC12V power input, all spaced generously enough to avoid any cable-clearance headaches on a crowded desk.
One small design touch I genuinely appreciate is the flat, square aluminum “roof” capping the top of the chassis.
Beyond keeping the tubes shielded from an accidental knock or a dropped pen, it doubles as a legitimate little shelf; I’ve found it a convenient spot to rest a compact DAC or dongle on top of the amp rather than cluttering more desk space around it.
Tubes
The dual 6J1 tubes remain the heart of the MT-02, but they’re presented quite differently than on the MT-602.
Rather than sitting fully exposed on top of the chassis, the tubes glow from within the acrylic side panels, visible but shielded, which does make simple tube-rolling a slightly fiddlier affair than reaching straight down onto an open tube socket the way you could on the older model.
It’s a worthwhile trade for the aesthetic. Watching the tubes flicker to life through the aluminum ring during that 30-second warm-up gives the MT-02 a distinct identity that the more utilitarian MT-602 never really had, even if hobbyists who like swapping tubes on a whim will need a little more patience.
I/O
Unlike xDuoo’s DM-01, the MT-02 has no onboard DAC and no wireless connectivity of any kind.
Its only input is a pair of RCA aux jacks, meaning it functions purely as an amplification and tube-coloration stage that needs an external DAC or other analog source feeding into it before any sound reaches your headphones.
On the output side, you get a 6.35mm single-ended headphone jack and a 4.4mm output sitting right beside it.
Worth noting that this isn’t a fully differential balanced circuit internally, so treat the 4.4mm jack more as a convenience connector for balanced-terminated cables than a true balanced amplification stage.
However, it still meaningfully improves compatibility with modern headphone cables and connector standards.
Around back, the RCA pre-out is synced to the front volume knob, letting the MT-02 double as a genuine tube preamplifier for a power amp or a pair of active desktop speakers, a feature the pricier DM-01 doesn’t offer in quite the same dedicated, volume-linked form.
It’s a small but useful bit of versatility for a desktop system that might grow beyond headphones down the line.
Controls
The MT-02 opts for a straightforward, dial-based control scheme with a single large volume knob. In practice, though, the taper of the volume control is quite steep.
The sweep from silent to uncomfortably loud happens within a narrow arc of the knob’s travel, with a touch of channel imbalance right at the very bottom of that range.
Full-sized headphones have enough usable range for this to be a non-issue, but it does mean sensitive IEMs benefit from a source that can attenuate its own output rather than relying on the knob alone for fine control.
The new front-panel gain switch is the standout addition here: flipping between +12dB and +18dB takes seconds and makes a real, audible difference in matching the MT-02 to sensitive IEMs versus harder-to-drive full-sized headphones, directly addressing one of the most common complaints leveled at the MT-602.
Power is handled by a simple rocker switch, and the 30-second warm-up delay before audio is passed through is barely noticeable in daily use once you’re used to building it into your routine. There’s no lighting scheme or display to speak of, and no menus to dig through.
It’s a refreshingly analog experience that puts the emphasis squarely on the knob and the tubes doing their job, rather than on managing a layer of digital controls.
Packaging & Accessories
The MT-02 ships in a fairly plain white cardboard box. Inside, you’ll find the amplifier itself and a 12V/2A power brick, a fairly bare-bones accessory bundle overall for a $149 unit.
There’s no RCA interconnect cable included, which is a curious omission given that the MT-02 is entirely dependent on an external RCA source to function. Most buyers will need to source one separately before they can even hear the amp for the first time.
Sound Impressions
The following sound impressions of the xDuoo MT-02 were compiled using the Sennheiser HD 600, Sony MDR Z7, HIFIMAN Arya Stealth, and the MOONDROP Blessing 3 as the primary headphone and IEM pairings. The Topping DX1 II and the FiiO K13 R2R were my primary DAC pairings.
Bass
The MT-02’s low end favors note weight and control over outright impact.
Sub-bass extension is present and reasonably well defined, with the emphasis leaning toward a fuller mid-bass that adds a touch of analog warmth without bleeding into the midrange or clouding detail further up the frequency range.
Dynamics stay impressively tight for a tube-hybrid design; bass guitar lines and kick drums retain their shape and don’t smear together even in busier mixes, a credit to the Class-A output stage doing the heavy lifting behind the tube coloration up front. This tuning particularly suits funk, hip-hop, and R&B.
Compared to a purely solid-state amp, the MT-02 softens transients just enough to feel relaxed and inviting, but it never crosses into bloated or one-note territory the way some cheaper tube designs can.
Overall, the low end reads as controlled, moderately warm, and dynamic rather than lush or overpowering, a sensible balance for an amp meant to pair with a wide variety of headphones and IEMs across genres.
Mids
The midrange is where the MT-02’s tube coloration is most obvious. Vocals sit forward and intimate, without tipping over into an unnatural or overly hyped presentation that fatigues over long sessions.
This intimacy doesn’t come at the expense of resolution, either. Fine textures in acoustic guitar and piano recordings remain audible, and the MT-02 manages to retain a surprising amount of detail despite its close, cozy staging and forward vocal presence.
Electric guitars and keys carry a rounded, analog character that favors musicality and tonal richness over clinical precision, which fits the amp’s overall identity as a device built for long, fatigue-free listening sessions rather than cold and analytical.
The warmth colors the presentation without smothering it, letting instruments retain their individual character while still benefiting from that classic tube glow running underneath everything.
For listeners who prioritize an engaging, musical midrange over ruler-flat neutrality, this is exactly the kind of tuning that makes a tube amp worth owning in the first place, and the MT-02 leans into that identity confidently.
Treble
Treble on the MT-02 leans smooth and forgiving, firmly avoiding any hint of harshness or sibilance even on brighter, more aggressively mastered recordings. What stands out most, though, is how clean and quiet the top end is.
The noise floor is notably low, a clear improvement over the MT-602, and it’s the main reason the MT-02 can comfortably drive sensitive IEMs without the hiss that plagues many tube-based amplifiers at this price point.
Detail retrieval up top is respectable rather than exceptional; the MT-02 trades some of the last word in air and sparkle for a calmer, more natural presentation that never fatigues even after extended listening sessions.
Cymbals and hi-hats carry enough texture and decay to feel real and present, just without the aggressive edge or forward bite some listeners chase in more analytical, solid-state gear.
Staging & Dynamics
The MT-02’s soundstage leans intimate and close rather than wide and airy, a natural consequence of its vocal-forward midrange tuning and tube-driven character. That intimacy doesn’t come at the cost of separation, however.
Instruments remain distinct within the mix, and the amp does a commendable job avoiding the congested, smeared imaging that can plague lesser tube designs at this price bracket.
Dynamic swings are handled with more authority than the tube-forward tonality might initially suggest.
Sudden shifts in volume or intensity come through with real punch rather than getting rounded off or softened, keeping the listening experience lively and engaged rather than sleepy or one-dimensional.
The result is a presentation that prioritizes closeness and cohesion over outright scale, better suited to genres built around vocal and instrumental intimacy.
