    The One You Really Want
As most people know, because I keep saying it, I do like my lighter reads but they have to have a bit of grit rather than just being vacuous. This book, as with others I have read by this author, ticked that box for me nicely although it has to be said that it’s a bit on the formulaic side. So, Nancy gets a lovely shiny red lawnmower from her husband for Christmas. Nice… well, it would have been if it hadn’t been for the Christmas card he got from the Jewellers he recently made a purchase from. With her mother, Rose, coming to stay over Christmas, Nancy has to try and hold it together so it is her best friend Carmen that she sobs to on the phone. With Nancy facing Boxing day at the pub, Carmen races to visit her, dragging her brother-in-law, Rennie, along for the ride. When one of the other Boxing Day pub attendees is seen sporting a shiny new ring, Nancy is easily persuaded to up sticks and go live in London with Carmen. Or, being specific, with Carmen in her huge luxury home she used to share with her now dead ex-rockstar husband, Spike, in Chelsea. Rennie is also staying with Carmen as the other members of his own band seem to be having their own crises and he therefore find himself at a loose end. To complete the menagerie, Rose is invited to stay for a holiday after she loses her job.So, add to this strange household; neighbour Connor and his daughter Mia, Joe the plumber and charity worker, Nick and Annie – Carmen’s friends from the shelter she volunteers at, Zac the fashion designer, Tabitha and Sadie – Connor’s love interests, as well as a whole host of bit part players and what follows is classic chic lit. Wrong ends of sticks are grasped, conversations overheard and misinterpreted, feelings are denied and/or otherwise faked, and lightbulb moments are reached until finally we have the ending that warms us and makes us feel cosy. And all the way whilst getting there we have a bit of everything. Action, adventure, romance, heartbreak, intrigue – some light moments, some poignant ones and some funny, often very funny scenes. As far as this genre of books is concerned, this book is a good example. Yes, we all know where we are going, yes we all know we will get there in the end. There aren’t that many surprises, but it’s not a bad ride to get there. It’s a great light read for someone like me who likes a feel good book but needs it to be a little bit more than light and fluffy. All in all, reading this book gave me a nice break from my usual crime fiction whilst also being a very satisfying read.I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

    Warm and amusing
Full of gentle humour and subplots, this was great read to polish off in a weekend when, let’s face it, most of us do not want to engage in anything too mentally demanding or start something we’ll still be reading in six months. I found the characters likeable and despite their ‘rock and roll’ circumstances, surprisingly genuine. Lots of people have knocked a star off saying they muddled up characters and that the story kept going back and forth, but I found this shutting the door on one character for a while and concentrating on another gave the book a vibrant and fast-paced feel. I like a book that leaves me in a good mood with a smile on my face, so for that reason alone, it gets five stars.

    Pleasant easy read
This is the first Jill Mansell book I’ve read. I downloaded it for free.I enjoyed reading it and finished it quickly… (Its a pleasant, easy read). The story revolves around 3 main characters at different points in their lives. Nancy, married who discovers her husband is having an affair; her friend who was widowed; and her mum.I did find the storyline a bit on the predictable side as you could figure out who was going to end up with who in the end but I enjoyed reading how they came together…This would be a very good book for a holiday read as its pleasant, enjoyable and not too heavy going.I dont know why a few reviews say they had trouble keeping up with all the characters as this wasnt a problem for me…The feel good happy ending was nice, but as mentioned previously very predictable.A happily-ever-after story about people from all walks of life!

  5. A Reader’s Perspective

    Enjoyable
This is the first Jill Mansell book I have ever read, and I came about it via the book of the month on a Facebook readers group. We all downloaded it for free.I enjoyed reading it and finished it quickly (since I had this horrible cough bug & needed to relax)! I have rated it a 4, but it could have been a 3.Basically, this is the story of love, in all it’s guises. Jill certainly throws in a LOT of characters in the mix. From a very (unconvincing at times) 16 year old to a retired widow… I am usually very good at keeping track of characters, but at times I have to admit I got lost. Most of the characters were extremely likeable. In truth, it did miss a true rogue! There was one, in the form of the attractive blonde, but even there I am tired of the cliche. I have yet to meet someone like Sadie! The feel-good happy ending was nice, but very predictable. I think, as much as a lot of twists were thrown in, this lacked humour. I prefer a romantic book that either has me swooning for the main guy, or laughing at their antics. This did neither. It was very much like a TV series. Lots of drama.Anyway, for a free read it gets a 4! A happily-ever-after story about people from all walks of life!

Carmen and Nancy have been best friends since childhood. Carmen is dealing with her own depression after losing her beloved husband only three years before but when Nancy’s marriage takes a bad turn, Carmen is there to help.Nancy moves from her suburban house in Scotland to Carmen’s mansion in London to start her life over. With the move comes the shedding of her old life and she realizes it is more than time to move on. Carmen is going through a similar phase in life but has the extra baggage of being extremely rich. Whether she likes it or not, it is an issue and one that she tried to deal with in a variety of amusing ways. There are a number of men that move in and our of the two women’s lives (including Nancy’s ex who is completely clueless.) There are memorable characters that fill in the circle that surrounds the women. I especially liked two women: Mia, a teenager who lives next door and who seems to have been born quite mature and Rose, Nancy’s elderly mother who is quite surprising (to Nancy at least) quite modern in many of her thoughts and ways.Jill Mansell’s books always give me the feeling of looking in someone’s windows and watching a slice of their life. I find her characters and plots believable as well as fun and romantic. I’m always pleased to have opportunity to read one of her novels. In addition to the copy of the book I purchased on Amazon, I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.

My first read of this awesome author. Couldn’t put it down, literally, stayed in my pyjamas ALL DAY, read until I finished a wonderfully spun tale… One of love, loss, joy, and all the things that actually happen in between, in real life. I saw my life, my friends and family in all of these characters. Very strong characterization. And a story, beautifully told. I will be reading ALL of Jill Mansell’s novels!!! Every single one of them. And will be finished before she is able to produce more, much to my chagrin… Please, don’t stop writing! You bring joy to the lives of those who are lucky enough to know about you. I’m Canadian, mainly of Irish descent, and absolutely LOVE to read books about people who live in the world I love to visit and from where my ancestors came. But being Canadian is pretty awesome! I visit Ireland often, having roots there as well as in Scotland and England. Can’t wait to embark on a trip to the Highlands, as well as return visits to England and Ireland. I love your people, your sense of humour and have never been disappointed by the welcome I’ve always felt when visiting the part of the world Jill Mansell writes about. She makes me feel like I’m right there, and I really do want to be! Thanks for bringing me home.Cheers to an amazing author, from a huge Canadian fan!!Dr. Janice R.
