Funny and Entertaining Christmas Anthology
Gervase Phinn has written a marvellous and fitting anthology with a Christmas theme running throughout. The humour leaps out from page to page with the skilfully crafted scenes and the sparkling dialogue written in Yorkshire dialect. The initial focus is on infant nativity plays and the delights of childlike freshness and behaviour with the amusing mishaps that occur. As the author quotes the poet Coleridge, ‘There is nothing so affecting as the innocence of small children’.He recounts his own amusing experiences as a child and later as an inspector of schools at Christmas. He is not averse to poking fun at himself. His own participation in his school nativity play as a palm tree is worth the price of the book alone, which is full of anecdotes that are extremely funny. Included are short stories and brilliantly conceived unorthodox versions of parables including, ‘The Good Samaritan’, ‘The Prodigal Son’ and ‘The Lost Sheep’, where children exasperate their narrators. This is an anthology full of humour, witty dialogue and laugh-out-loud moments in Gervase Phinn style, along with touching moments. The emphasis is rightly on children and Christmas and events that most adult readers will be familiar with from their own offspring. This is a thoroughly entertaining book that can be picked up time and again. Illustrations are by Matthew Phinn. The poems and some stories have been previously published. Ideal for a self-read or a Christmas gift.

Not very funny
Having heard so much about the author, I was really looking forward to this book. But it was a big disappointment. I smiled occasionally, but didn’t find anything that was particularly funny. A very ordinary book.

I’ve bought this book for my sister for Christmas & I have briefly read some of the pages. Once again it had me in giggles. My sister was a dinner lady sadly now she has declining health but she loves Gervase Phinn books. These books transport her back to the school yard & canteen she cant speak for laughter & she can always put a name to an incident Gervase has written about. You want treat for everyone at Christmas or present for a teacher this is the book for you.

Very funny, especially if you’ve ever taught Key Stage 1
Very funny, especially if you’ve ever taught Key Stage 1!! It’s a light, easy read that’s enjoyable. Makes you laugh, sometimes out loud, which is always a bonus.

When I read other reviews, I was under the impression that it was a book about directing/observing children at Christmas time. It’s not. The book starts out with hilarious stories about the chaos that teaching children brings, then moves into anecdotes and short stories that go nowhere.
