‘You know you’re in for a treat when you open a Jenny Oliver book’ Debbie JohnsonWelcome to the most celebrated patisserie competition in Paris – ready, steady, bake!
Watching snowflakes settle on the Eiffel Tower, Rachel Smithson’s cosy English village feels very far way – as, thankfully, does her commitment-phobic ex, probably already kissing someone else under the mistletoe. But Rachel hasn’t come to Paris to mope she’s come to bake. Hard.
Because the search for Paris’s next patisserie apprentice is about to begin! And super-chef judge Henri Salernes is an infamously tough cookie. But Rachel isn’t about to let her confidence (or pastry) crumble. She’s got one week, mounds of melt-in-the-mouth macaroons and towers of perfect profiteroles to prove that she really is a star baker.
As well as clouds of flour, and wafts of chocolate and cinnamon, there’s definitely a touch of Christmas magic in the air… Rachel hasn’t come to Paris looking for a fairy-tale romance, but the city of love might gift-wrap her one anyway…
Not even a dusting of icing sugar could make The Parisian Christmas Bake Off a more perfect Christmas treat!

baking will never be the same again….
The Parisian Christmas Bake Off written by Jenny Oliver for me was a wonderful read as the characters were so real they felt like friends when the last page was reached. The story is based on a young teacher named Rachel who is surprised with the gift of a place in a baking competition in Paris, the week before Christmas. Rachel decides to go when she finds out her friends have also rented out her flat to a couple from Australia. It is not the fact it is Christmas which is putting Rachel off, it is the fact that she feels she really is not good enough baker. As far as she was concerned it was her Mother that was the real baker not her.As a reader I loved how the author brought the characters to the story and with every turn of the page I was entertained not only with the excellent storyline but the author has a wonderful gift of descriptive writing, I could imagine the tastes and smells of the food which Rachel baked with. Not only that but I could understand her fear of baking and her conscious hope of keeping Christmas at arm’s length. This really is a wonderful read, and as I watched in the background as Rachel ignited her love for baking as well as her decision to put her all into a competition which could change not only her working life but her personal life will never be the same again…The Parisian Christmas Bakeoff written by Jenny Oliver is a must read if you love cookery shows especially that famous one which sees a group of people baking wonderful bread and sweet pastries in a big tent. Each character has their own reason for wanting to win, whether they do it honestly is another matter?A great work of modern-day fiction which I am happy to recommend.

Perfect for lovers of The Great British Bake Off on television
When primary school teacher Rachel finds her friends have booked her into a baking competition in Paris during the Christmas holidays she is not best pleased. However, with her mother dead, an uncommunicative father and a n’er do well sort of boyfriend, she agrees to give it a try and so begins a competition that might just help her find herself again. For the first few pages of this book I thought I would find it formulaic and uninspiring. I was wrong. Admittedly, the plot has the elements one would expect, with a couple of love interests, some difficulties and a best friend for telling the protagonist a few home truths, but this predictability is also its strength. Readers of this genre want a book they feel familiar with, that is fun and that fulfills their reading preferences. Jenny Oliver does this brilliantly. We want snow and romance at Christmas and reading this book with its Parisian setting is what we get.‘The Parisian Christmas Bake Off’ is a lovely story. As the time frame for the setting is tight, there is excellent pace so the story zips along. Jenny Oliver uses the senses so well when she writes that I could see, smell, taste, touch and hear Christmas. The descriptions are so vivid I found myself incredibly hungry reading about all the baking and I actually felt quite Christmassy reading it in blazing sunshine in September. The characters all felt like real people and I thoroughly appreciated the way in which a range of individuals was presented. Of course, I preferred Philippe to Ben and I wanted Marcel to get his comeuppance! The full range of emotions is present from petty jealousies to hope and love so that readers can identify with what happens all the more easily. If you like watching The Great British Bake Off on television, you’ll adore Jenny Oliver’s ‘The Parisian Christmas Bake Off’. I know I did.

Mouthwateringly Christmassy!
The main character is Rachel who is in a dead end relationship with a bit of a loser to be honest. She also hates Christmas as she lost a loved one at Christmas so she doesn’t like to celebrate it – so her close knit village decided to club together and send her to Paris for a Bake Off competition with top chef Henri Salernes. She has her doubts but then she discovers that she has no choice but to go and I don’t think she realises what she’s let herself in for! Rachel doesn’t go to Paris looking for love – her mind is solely on getting through the competition then returning home, but will the city of love bring someone to her? It just might. The other contestants who she is competing against are a mixed bag and obviously all out to win, but a couple of them take it a bit more seriously than the others. The food descriptions throughout the competition had my mouth watering SO much that I might even have to attempt my own versions of some of the bakes! The whole book was really descriptive and I could just imagine that I was Rachel, in Paris; it was beautiful.Part of the ending wasn’t quite what I was expecting but I loved it nonetheless. Rachel returns home with a bright future ahead of her and the book finishes in a great place. It is really a great Christmas must-read and I will probably have to read it again next year!*Reviewed on Ladies Living in Bookland*

romantic fluff!
light hearted romance, bit predictable but entertaining if one doesn’t want to think too much! secondary characters were not well rounded and readers are left wondering what happened to them but not much caring for any of the people in the story

A Christmas treat!
With gorgeous descriptions of Paris, Christmas, copious amounts of delicious baking that’ll make your mouth water, and lots and lots of snow – what more could you ask for from a Christmas novel!Rachel’s set up by her friends to take part in the apprenticeship competition and from the first morning Chef Salernes has her card marked. He’s a bit of a tyrant – very Gordon Ramsey-esque with some cutting put downs! A bit of a cross between The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef there are no huge surprises but an easy enjoyable festive read. However, not entirely predictable as I thought it would be at the beginning with a bit of a twist which made for a pleasant surprise. This Christmas treat is definitely for fans of the Great British Bake off!

I didn’t want to put this book down. While some of it was a little unbelievable, it had a nice pace, interesting characterisation and made me hungry. Very hungry.Jenny Oliver is an engaging writer and so far I have not been disappointed by her books.

Chickit at its best – I loved this. It was endearing, evocative of Paris, snow and Christmas, and I really loved the lead character too. There are happy as well as sad moments throughout the story with a hoped for happy ending. I was sad to finish, I wanted to read more and more..

Quite a delightful read – bit of fluff really. Good read if you’ve read something hard going before and you want something you don’t have to think about. Food was beautifully described as was Paris. Nice.
