Pick a pine tree from the lot – slim and tall, or short and squat! Long straight limbs or branches bent… Mmm! Just smell that piney scent!
The first in the Pick a… series from award-winning duo Patricia Toht and Jarvis
From the dazzling duo who made Together With You comes a beautiful, irresistible Christmas gift book that all begins with … picking a pine tree! Brimming over with the excitement of being with family at the festive season, a gorgeously rhythmical, read-aloud narrative accompanied by warm, joyful art celebrates all the familiar rituals of decorating the tree – from digging out jam-packed boxes of trimmings, stringing tinsel, to, at last, turning on those twinkly fairy lights.

    The best Christmas book
This will be a tradition in our house for years to come, read this and then head to our local tree growing place to chop our own tree. It’s just like the book. What a beautiful story and the illustration is amazing

    Magical, a firm favourite.
I bought this for my 22 month old so we could talk about decorating the Xmas tree before we did it and build up excitement and understanding. It is already her book of the moment and she asks for it every night. The illustrations are beautiful, so nostalgic, festive and with plenty of things to point out and talk about. The story is a rhyming one about choosing a tree from the lot, bringing it home and decorating it which seems simple but it’s beautifully done. My little one’s face lights up at the final double page image of the final tree transformation. At which point she usually wants to start the book again. Worth every penny. I will look out for more from this author/illustrator combo as it comes together so magically In this book.

A timely arrival, this festive rhyme…
…illustrated by Jarvis.Once we have been to pick our Christmas tree, we will be writing some poems based around the easy flowing format here. From the back cover (image below refers):🌲‘Pick a pine tree from the lot ~slim and tall, or short and squat.Long straight limbsor branches bent…Mmm! Just smell that piney scent!’🌲The current stock images + the 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘 above give an idea of the content to see if it is the style for you & yours.ooOoo~ ‘Pick a PINE TREE’ measures roughly 27 cm x 24.5 cm; the card cover enhanced by shiny red that nonchalantly glistens in the change of light.Inside are 40 matte-finish pages; the rhyme running over 32 in double-page spread format, with an unexpected turn at the end!First up is that all-important chance to claim ownership of the well-produced publication (image below refers).Longer than your average picture book + set as a poem, the text, which is 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗘𝗗 at times, is a good size in black throughout and uses the rounded ‘𝒂’ and ‘𝒈’, which I love to see in a book for younger ones. The seemingly sketchy illustrations that accompany have more in most than first meets the eye, offering scope for further discussion and reminding me of some forgotten decorating ideas, e.g. lacy snowflakes & paper dolls!

    Exceptional book.
The artwork is truly fantastic, covering every inch of each page with glorious cosy festive colours, and images that really convey the magical sense of wonder that the Christmas season brings. From a snowy outdoor night time scene to basking in the light of the Christmas tree, you really feel you are a part of the story, and the large double-page picture at the end is magnificent. The story itself is simple, but engaging, and told in poem form. The book will make a lovely Christmas gift for my young relative.Only one minor quibble: although the spellings have been adjusted for the European market, it is still obvious the story was written for an American audience. Some examples: using ‘Christmas tree lot’ instead of nursery/farm/shop, ‘sled’ instead of sledge, ‘lay’ instead of lie, ‘trimmings’ instead of decorations, rhyming ‘dolls’ with ‘balls’, calling lametta ‘tinsel’ and calling tinsel ‘garland’. Children won’t care, but reading as an adult it can jar a little.

Really enjoyed the story. Also sent a copy to my niece and nephew. However, they have never had a real tree so not sure it will have the same meaning to them.
