An emotional and compelling wartime drama from the author of Only a Mother Knows and A Christmas Promise -perfect for fans of Katie Flynn.
The phoney war is over and Hitler’s bombs are raining down on the city of Liverpool.
Rita Kennedy is forced to face some unpalatable truths about her husband, Charlie. But she must still play the part of dutiful wife, while her childhood sweetheart, Jack Callaghan, has shown her nothing but kindness. Can they keep a check on their emotions or will their friendship develop into something more?
For Kitty Callaghan, burying herself in her work distracts from the constant worry about her brothers. Tommy is back from his evacuee posting after falling ill, but now he faces danger in another guise. And what about Danny, always ducking and diving and up to no good? And then there’s Frank Feeny, the man she adores. Will they ever be together?
With a Christmas of rationing and ‘going without’ to look forward to, the women of Empire Street are being tested like never before. But their troubles are only just beginning…

first class fiction which I simply loved…
Christmas on the Mersey was written by Sheila Riley under the name of Annie Groves. Once again we are brought back into the lives of the residents of Empire Street where the residents held body and soul together while standing up against the regular raids by Hitler’s bombers.Once again we meet Kitty who has grown in strength and character, and though she now resides in London as a WREN, doing her bit to help win the war her heart still remains in her hometown where Frank Feeney has accepted his fate and now is using his knowledge to help win the war. This was another wonderful read filled with every one of the residents as they narrated their own story which made this book a wonderful read. What makes this book different is the years have progressed through the war, and the rations are really taking hold…It was wonderful to see how the neighbours have really pulled together, but of course, there are always those who were out to look after number one and that was themselves. This was a book which entertained while educating me what life was life for the residents of Liverpool, while they were suffering their own Blitz yet did not receive the same attention which London did.I would recommend this wonderful read to all readers of historical fiction, especially those who love characters which really develope through a series of books and it was really interesting to see how the War changed them and showed them a different side to their characters but also took them on a journey which previously they could never have imagined them ever leaving the streets of their birth.A wonderful read which I am happy to recommend. I would also like to recommend the audio version which was narrated by Sue Jenkins who brought so much to the storyline as she gives each character their own voice and personality which really added to the enjoyment of this wonderful work of fiction.

A quick heartwarming read. Similar to others in this genre, likeable characters, familiar places in the book. Liverpool sense of humour and community shines through.

The sort of book I thought about during the day , liking forward to continuing reading that evening . I loved hearing names of streets I know brought back nice memories of when I was a child in Liverpool. I looked to see if there is a continuation ( book ) as it ended a bit abruptly for one of characters , but didn’t find anything.
