The New York Times–bestselling author of The Christmas Hope returns with a heartwarming tale of two families sharing holiday traditions across time.
In June 1972, John Creighton determines to build his wife Joan a kitchen table. Though he’s never built anything larger than a picture frame, he promises to have the table ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Inspired to put something delicious on the table, Joan turns to the recipes she got from her mother as a wedding gift.
In June 2012, newlyweds Travis and Lauren Mabrey discovers she’s pregnant. When Gloria, Miriam, and the rest of her friends at Glory’s Place begin to pitch in, a second-hand table reveals a surprise inside the drawer: a stack of recipe cards. Having grown up without a family, Lauren is fascinated as she reads through the cards. Personal notes on each card make Lauren wonder about the mother and daughter who shared them.
Alternating between 1972 and 2012, The Christmas Table unfolds a heartwarming tale of two families who share a unique bond. As Christmas nears, Lauren hopes to unlock the mystery of the table and find the peace she’s always longed for . . .

    such an emotional book
5 starsI am an emotional wreck after reading this book. Genuinely, it takes a lot for me to cry during a book yet I was a blubbering mess after this. It pulled on all my heartstrings. It was heartbreaking, beautiful and a giant hug! This story takes place in 2012 but also in 1972. These two families in two different timelines have one thing in common, a wooden table. When Lauren and her husband Travis buys a second-hand wooden table they didn’t realise the history the purchased along with it. When Lauren discovers old family recipes in one of the drawers, she is determined to hunt down the rightful owners. Could they be closer than what they thought? This book is filled with joy, sorrow, grief and hope. I loved every second of reading this. I loved every single character and I can’t remember the last time I thought that about a book. Each character and family were different from their circumstances, however, they had a connection. This has an “everything happens for a reason” philosophy about it. I was hooked from the very beginning. I would smell the cooking and I cried with the characters, I was that invested in their story. In saying that, I smiled A LOT too, once or twice I even laughed out loud. This book has the perfect balance of happiness and sadness. It is genuinely an amazing read and I highly recommend it to everyone.

A heartwarming, feel good Christmas tale.
I’ll be honest The Christmas Table isn’t my usual read, in fact it’s nothing like the books I tend to lean towards. So, I was a little sceptical going in, especially as this is a faith-based story, and that’s not my thing. But I can’t deny it was heartwarming, feel-good and easy to read, and I really liked the idea of it being about two women from very different generations who are linked together through a table and family recipes. And Donna VanLiere has certainly created a well-written, descriptive story. That is bursting with love, family, friendship and goodness. And whilst I wouldn’t necessarily read The Christmas Table again, I did find it engaging, and if you’re a fan of the author or women’s fiction in general, then you should certainly give it a try, as it truly is a heartwarming Christmas tale.**I was kindly provided with an ARC by St Martin’s Press in exchange for an honest review**

I’ve really come to enjoy the majority of the Donna vanliere Christmas books. They all take place in the same town and you’ll see the same characters throughout every book but it exchanges which characters are in front and which are in the background each book. If you’re looking for something that is a relatively light read during the holiday season I highly recommend anyone of these books. My favorite one is the Christmas promise and I have to say that this book is probably my second or third favorite. It goes in between two different time. The 1970s and 2012. In the 70s we meet a woman who has two small children whose trying to learn how to cook while her husband dreams of building and also attempting to build a table for the holidays so they can sit around it meanwhile she also finds out that she must fight breast cancer. Meanwhile in 2012 a character that we’ve met within the past couple of newer books goes on search for a table and finds the table that this man from the 70s built along with a slew of recipe cards so she decides to try to track down the owner and of course ultimately she does. And of course there is an interloping of characters from modern day and back then. Definitely a Charming little story that will put a smile to your face and as a bonus there are few family recipes in the back of the book

This story, like so many of Ms VanLiere’s stories is filled with hope, love, perseverance and faith. I laughed and cried and cell in love with the community of Grandon. I love the way the author wove the story timelines together, showing us how the characters were connected and the impact that connection had on their lives. The ending was amazing! It was a true joy to read.

I loved this heartwarming novel with characters that jump right out of the book and into your heart and a beautifully written story that seamlessly goes back and forth between 1972 and 2012. This is the first book I have read by Donna VanLiere but it definitely won’t be the last. “The Christmas Table” is a perfect read for this time of year and will inspire you, put a smile on your face, joy in your heart and ready for the holidays. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
