A real festive treat, by a brilliant author
Alexandra Brown is one of those authors, whose books you wait for with great anticipation. Since reading Cupcakes at Carringtons and falling in love with Alexandra’s writing style- I’ve always pre-ordered so I get it as soon as it’s released.I was really excited about receiving The Great Christmas Knit Off, that as soon as the book had arrived in the post- I snuggled up to read it and I wasn’t disappointed- luckily for me the release date fell on the first day of my weeks holiday from work, not planned at all. From the end of chapter one, Alexandra had me smiling. Sybil is a really likeable character- she’s one of those characters, where you wish you had someone like that in real life. I love the fact Sybil’s dog is called Basil and the dog on the front cover is just adorable. I adore Sybil’s character, just as much as I do Georgie Hart- from the Carringtons series. I don’t know what or how Alexandra does it, but she has this way of making the reader connect with the characters like no other author I’ve read before.I’ve read a lot of books this year, but by far this has been one of the best. Whenever I pick up an Alexandra Brown book, I always get a lot of enjoyment from her writing and always sad when I have to pause to do some chores or I’ve come to the end.I would very much recommend The Great Christmas Knit Off to you and if you haven’t already read them, her Carringtons series. Alexandra is a brilliant author, who provides you with hours of entertainment and pure contentment. I now wait with great anticipation for the second instalment- fingers crossed it’s not to long……..

A warm, entertaining and relaxing read.
A lovely heart warming read. Spurned by her boyfriend at the alter and stuck in a dead end job. An unplanned escape to the country to visit an old mate creates new opening and suddenly life is a whole lot better.Whilst admittedly full of cliches this is a really lovely relaxing read by a British author and set in the English countryside. Clearly a teaser for the full series with some characters much more fleshed out than others. I am sure we will get to know them all better in future works.Whilst another reader compared the author to Sophie Kinsella, I didn’t make the same connection. Whilst this book had admitedly more pages and substance it did remind me of the Hannah Swanson series by Joanne Fluke, complete with recipes and cuddly pet which is also set in he countryside. This was my first Alexandra Brown book, but plan to read more.Recommend for lovers of warm and fuzzy chic lit.

My favourite Christmas read this year!
I have read all of Alexandra’s books and enjoyed some more than others. I’m a sucker for a Christmas read though so was instantly drawn to this. Would I like it though given I have no interest in knitting? The book follows Sybs and her trusty dog, Basil. Thinking she has made a huge error at work, she takes herself off to the sleepy town where her friend lives. There she meets Hettie, owner of a haberdashery which is under threat. Can Sybs save the day?I instantly loved the characters and was sucked into this lovely, cosy village. I live in a small village in North yorkshire so I could relate to some of the villagers ways! I felt for Sybs and was keeping my fingers crossed that everything would be ok for her. Some other reviews have pointed out how unrealistic it is but most Christmas reads are! I really enjoyed it and it’s my favourite Christmas read this year. At its current kindle price, you are getting a bargain!

Warm and wonderful
I love Christmas books, they make me feel all warm and cosy inside and this one was no different, it delivered seasonal warmth and happiness in spades. The first (and hopefully not the last) book set in Tindledale, a tight knit (excuse the pun) community who look out for each other. The characters are so lovely, Sybs the main one ends up in Tindledale after a non wedding and a potential problem at work, to stay with her friend Cher. She ends up meeting all the wonderful people and helping a lovely old lady Hettie bring her haberdashery shop into the 21st century. Sybs and her dog Basil are befriended by everyone in the village including the rather flamboyant Lawrence the kindly B&B owner and the dishy Doctor Ben. I have loved all of Alexandra’s books, her Carrington’s ones remain some of my favourites, and now this one is right there up with them. It has even made me get my knitting needles out! can’t wait for the next!

A nice read
I really enjoy reading Alexandra Brown’s books but this new series was a little bit of a let down for me. Though I liked the main character and her progress through her heartbreak I also felt bored reading it, I actually found myself skimming over some of the intricate descriptions as they detracted from the story. I will continue to read Alexandra’s books as I loved the carrigton series and hope this new series improves along the way.

Fun heartwarming story
This was a fun heartwarming story which is just the thing if you are looking for a light read. Being a keen crafter myself (knitting, crochet, embroidery and papercrafting), it was lovely to have a character with the same interests. However, the downside of being a knitter meant that I did get a bit niggled that some of the practicalities of the knit-off were never mentioned. In real life, for example, it would not be possible for several people to knit one jumper between them unless they all knitted to the same tension or adjusted for it and this would always be discussed. Also the joy that every keen knitter that I know of experiences when they are in a wool shop feeling all the different types of yarns (alpaca, merino, cashmere, cotton etc) and the excitement of seeing the rainbows of colours didn’t really come through for me. However, a sweet story, nevertheless.

No spoilers. 🙂 This was a great story, very well written and easy to read. I’ll be looking for other books by this author.

After being jilted at the altar when her husband to be failed to show for the ceremony, Sybil has been in a bit of a downward spiral. She has been messing up at work and is depressed and lonely, sure that her life as she knew it is over. The only thing that has brought her any kind of joy is her knitting. There’s nothing more satisfying or comforting than the click clack of knitting, of being able to create something from nothing. She’s always been crazy about all kinds of knit craft. It brings her to a happy place when nothing else can. When Sybil makes a disastrous mistake at work that could cost Sybil her job, she takes off to visit her best friend Cher. She’s just taken on the position of bar maid at the Duck and Puddle in the picturesque postcard town of Tinledale. It’s the perfect place to escape all of her problems. What she doesn’t expect to find in such a small village is a shop that caters to all of her knitting desires! Except that Hettie’s House of Habberdahsery is in need of a spruce up! It’s run by Hettie who is having her own woes to deal with: she’s facing the possible closure of her beloved store. Customers have dropped off and sales are almost non-existent!When the two of them meet, Hettie is inspired by Sybil’s wacky Christmas jumper to try something different. With a bit of yarn and some knitting needles, maybe a Christmas miracle is possible…I am constantly wowed by Alexandra Brown’s books and this one is my favourite of her books to date. It’s a warm hearted novel full of characters you will grow to love as the book progresses. There’s Lawrence, the owner of the B and B, Cher and her boyfriend Sonny who run the pub, Hetie and Sybil and many more. What I love about Alexandra’s characters is that, by the end of the novel, they’re your friends.Sybil is a winning protagonist who is on a journey of self-discovery and I cheered for her the whole novel through. It was a delight to watch her shed her insecurities and emerge as the woman she was always meant to be.What I loved most about this book was the depth and heart that it was written with. It never comes across as saccharine and the characters are dealing with real issues and problems that others will recognize. There is no duex ex machina to save the day, but instead the miracle occurs within the characters themselves. Also a delight is the fact that you don’t have to know anything about knitting to enjoy the novel, but Alexandra somehow makes the act of knitting exciting. So exciting in fact that I’ve pulled out the scarf I started years ago and have resumed knitting it. I feel like I’m taking part in the Knit and Natter at Hetties, so wonderful is the spell that Alexandra weaves with The Great Christmas Knit Off!With The Great Christmas Knit Off, Alexandra has really out done herself. You instantly feel as if you’re reading a Christmas classic. It’s got everything you could want in a Christmas read: great characters, heartache turned to joy, a miracle or two plus enough knitted jumpers to make even the biggest Christmas grinch happy! It’s an absolute joy from start to finish and I can’t wait to read it again!Do yourself a favour this Christmas and read The Great Christmas Knit Off! Knit one, pearl two….
