She ran along the snow-covered cobbles, gripping her sewing box – fate in her hands…

Her estranged grandfather unexpectedly bequeaths a small, struggling factory making mourning dresses and Amelia dares to dream… Drawing sketches by candlelight, she longs to sew elegant gowns from fine silks and beautiful ribbons for the rich.

As the cold winter wind begins to bite, Amelia’s future hangs by a thread – can she keep her hopes alive?

    Enjoyed this book
I always enjoy Dilly Court books . This book was really a very good story , I enjoyed every page and couldn’t put it down , there were familiar characters from other books and I really liked how they were incorporated into this story line . Problem now is I have to wait for the next Dilly Court book to be released, hope it’s not too long . I highly recommend this book and this author.

    Ties into Rockwood series, excellent!
Having read all of Court’s books was delighted with this one in that it didn’t dwell on smells of the slums and abject poverty and the bad guys weren’t excessive and of course the main cast of characters and strong supporting actors (sewing room gals) were well done. Bonus was the tie in of characters from Rockwood, wonderfully executed and perfect set up to continue in another stellar book, I hope! Enough twists and turns without becoming belaboured that kept you guessing which makes a page turner, a delightful read.Have no idea however about the thimble as there wasn’t one and the back cover statement of running thru the snow with a sewing box as there wasn’t that scene either. Up your game publisher, Court is worth it.

It’s a very big task these days to hold a reader’s interest with anything but murder, violence, descriptive sexuality and torture. But this novel does. There is the threat of violence; there are evictions and outright mean people in this book. But not more than that. Not only does the protagonist overcome and stand up to all these roadblocks, she outshines them all.She does this with the help of good friends, many who she herself helped with no hesitation. In the tradition of Jules Verne’s characters, she never slips into self-pity, but is always thinking of the next step: what to do and how to accomplish what she needs to do.The book is well written, and a testament to that is that there is actually suspense, and this is something of a page turner. There is a happy ending, and although romance is not the main feature, it certainly does figure into the story. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
