After Asus, is OnePlus next to exit the smartphone market? Here’s the truth behind the recent report

The CEO of OnePlus India has clarified that the recent rumors of OnePlus shutting down are false.

There’s a strong reason why you’ll often see us using phrases like “take this information with a pinch of salt.” That’s because no news or information can be fully trusted unless it’s officially confirmed. That said, it was recently confidently reported that OnePlus could close its operations due to poor sales. However, OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu has clarified that the report is wrong, and OnePlus will continue to operate as usual.

The report cited OnePlus’s poor performance in recent times as the reason for its potential closure in the near future. It shows Omdia Research data indicating that OnePlus phone sales declined by more than 20% between 2023 and 2024. On the other hand, its parent company, Oppo, saw growth over the same period.

OnePlus sells around 74% of its smartphones in China and India. However, the company reportedly holds only a 1.6% and 3.9% market share in these countries, respectively. The report further mentions that the Oppo-owned company has lost contracts with various carriers recently. Most of its employees have been laid off in countries like the US, France, Germany, and the UK. Many retailers have also reportedly stopped selling OnePlus phones in recent times due to low margins.

All these findings, along with statements from individuals familiar with OnePlus operations, led to the creation and publication of this story about OnePlus being “dismantled.” However, it’s worth noting that only Liu’s post specifically mentions OnePlus India. Does that mean the report holds true for OnePlus’s other markets? It’ll only become clear when there’s confirmation from OnePlus officials in those regions.

Will only Apple, Samsung, and Google remain at the end?

As of now, there isn’t any monopoly, duopoly, or triopoly in the smartphone market. Brands like Vivo, OPPO, Apple, Huawei, Google, Samsung, and more all get equal opportunity to showcase their devices. I may be wrong, but I think in the future only a few smartphone brands will be left, and the signs of it have already started to appear.

Remember HTC, BlackBerry, or LeEco? These were some of the popular phone brands when I was growing up, but now they have exited the industry completely. In May 2021, LG exited the phone business, and Asus has also recently confirmed its plan to stop manufacturing smartphones. If this trend continues, only three main players, Google, Samsung, and Apple, will remain in the smartphone business. But as mentioned, I might be thinking too far ahead, and I really hope it turns out to be wrong.

Nonetheless, OnePlus’s future in the Indian market seems secure for now. But will it continue to operate in other countries moving forward? This will only be confirmed after representatives from OnePlus’s various markets issue an official statement addressing the allegations of OnePlus settling down.
